A NURSE has hit the bingo jackpot by winning more than £100,000.
Joan Jackson, a senior nurse at the University Hospital of Wales, Heath, Cardiff, arranged a nurses’ night out to say goodbye to a colleague who was leaving to have a baby.
Her choice of venue was the Gala Club on Excelsior Industrial Estate, off Western Avenue, Cardiff, where she regularly plays bingo with her daughter.
And what a choice it turned out to be because on Saturday evening Joan won the National Bingo Game prize of £100,000 plus the house prize of £150 after completing a full house in 41 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 500 clubs playing nationwide.
“When I realised I had won, I had to keep calm or I’d have a heart attack,” said Joan.
“All my nursing skills came to the fore and I kept myself cool, calm and collected.”
Joan, who is mum to Gaynor, 26, Carly, 24, Chloe, 20, Jonathan, 18, and who has a granddaughter Mckenzie, two, has been playing bingo for many years and has been a member of the Gala club since it opened.
“I’m from Liverpool originally and I always use my lucky red Liverpool pen to play bingo,” said Joan.
“It was clearly a lucky night because the ward sister won £50 at the club before my win.
“And the nurse who has left to have a baby enjoyed it so much that she’s going to start playing bingo regularly.
“I’m definitely going to be arranging more of these nurses’ bingo nights from now on.”
Joan plans to treat her children, and carry out some renovations on her house, including a new kitchen.
And she added: “I’ll be buying lots of biscuits for the nurses on the wards.”

“Past their sell-by date” is the indictment dished out on the reunited Spice Girls by Irish pop mogul Louis Walsh. I’d rather play online bingo than listen to the Spice Girls is the feeling of this writer in agreeing with Mr Walsh, the man behind such cultural wonders as Westlife, Boyzone and Samantha Mumba.
Mr Walsh has also turned his barbs against pop idols Robbie Williams and Will Young, saying about Williams: Its great about Take That getting back together and they didn need Robbie. Hes overrated and has lost his sense of reality. He should be grateful that he has been so successful with not a lot of talent.”
Turning his attention to Will Young: Will (Young) is too pretentious. Im not keen on him.”
However, his nastiest words were reserved for the Brit Pop 90’s sensation the Spice Girls of whom he said: The Spice Girls are only reuniting because they have nothing else to do. Ones just the wife of a soccer star and the others are not on the radar. They
e well past their sell-by date.
Ouch! Even us types who play bingo games online might find that a little harsh. Personally, I would say they’re as relevant as boyband promoters looking to get a bit of press time when he should be thinking about taking up free online bingo in his old age.
